Day 23: Binding

January 24, 2010

Today, we start on the last step of our Quilt Along — the binding.

The first thing we are going to do is fold the binding in half (wrong sides together) and press.

Step 1: Pinning the Binding

Starting in the middle of one side, align the raw edges of the binding to the raw edge of the quilt top and pin.
When you get to the corner, your going to create a triangle, by lifting the fabric up in a 90 degree angle and then folding it down.

Continue to pin around the entire quilt.

Step 2: Sewing the Binding

We’re going to start sewing the binding on the side with the loose end pieces. Measure about 10 inches from the end piece and start sewing  a 1/4 inch seam around the quilt. A walking foot will help keep all of layers from shifting so use it if you have it. If you don’t have one, sew more carefully.

When you reach the corner, you’re going to stop sewing about a quarter inch away from the end. And sew diagonally towards the end of the quilt top.

We going to create the same fabric triangle as we did before by lifting the fabric up  at a 90 degree angle and then folding it down. Continue to sew 1/4 inch seam.

When you get back to the side with the loose ends, leave a 10 inch space between the first stitch and the last. A video on finishing the binding:
